The year in film

Best Movies of 2024

Dune: Part Two. The Substance. Conclave. The films that proved cinema can still surprise us.

2024 was a year of sequels that surpassed originals, arthouse films crossing over into mainstream success, and one deeply divisive body-horror film winning a Cannes prize. Dune: Part Two delivered on everything Part One promised. Deadpool & Wolverine broke R-rated box office records. The Substance made audiences simultaneously disgusted and obsessed. Inside Out 2 made adults cry in ways they weren't prepared for.

If 2023 was Barbenheimer, 2024 was the year cinema proved it could still surprise us. These are the films that earned real Must ratings from real viewers — not algorithmic suggestions or paid placements.

The best films of 2024 you might have missed

A Real Pain is 90 minutes and contains more feeling than most three-hour epics. I Saw the TV Glow is the strangest thing A24 released all year. Love Lies Bleeding, The Bikeriders and Hit Man all played to small audiences and deserved far more. If you only saw the blockbusters, start here.

2024 vs 2023: which year was better for cinema?

2023 had the bigger cultural moment — Oppenheimer and Barbie in the same weekend. 2024 had the deeper bench. Its top twenty is stronger, its animated films are better, and its horror was genuinely radical. 2023 wins on spectacle; 2024 wins on quality across the board.
